There are places in the UK that scream craft beer due to its brewing heritage, its densely populated brewing scene or having a handful of good drinking spots. Leeds, Manchester and Newcastle are all shining examples of this. Then there are small pockets and places where you wouldn’t imagine craft beer to thrive. One of those places is Castleford.
Now I don’t want to dwell in the realms of negativity too much here, but Castleford isn’t renowned for its attractions pulling people in. Thankfully, however, that appears to be changing. With Yorkshire Craft Beers opening its doors this year (check my review here) people clearly see the potential in the old town. Little Black Dog Beer Co. also have their hopes well placed here, as they have committed to opening their second bar in the town.
Having one bar already in nearby Selby, this adds to their roster nicely, pushing craft beer to new and existing fans alike. Having kept a close eye on their progress, this bar was a real labour of love by the team there. A lot of time and effort was put into creating the space they have; a rustic and charming room that is welcoming to all. A hand crafted bar to serve hand crafted beers.
Given its size, you’d think the number of taps (and resulting beer selection) would be quite limited. Thankfully, this isn’t the case with 20 keg offerings and four casks on when we visited. Their social media presence surrounding the launch has been very strong, keeping pages updated with new beers as and when they go on.
The mixture of people there was, as you would expect, mixed with varying groups enjoying the wares on offer. It will be interesting to see how this develops and is maintained as people become more familiar with the bar and the beers it has to offer. You never know, the local real ale and lager guzzlers may be converts!
Given its convenience for us, I can see us spending a lot of time there and sharing plenty of beers with them in future and I cannot wait. It’s great to see people taking a risk in moving to Castleford and wish them all the best in making it a success. Here’s to a thriving future for all involved.
