Maison Du Biere – Elsecar

It’s a well known fact; between Christmas and New Year all days seem to merge into one. Nobody quite knows what day it is, it’s socially acceptable to drink during the day and binge on leftovers. For many, myself included, there’s only so much of this you can take before you have to venture outside.

A trip to Wentworth Castle Gardens was my means of escape, blowing away the cobwebs of the previous few days. But even as a means of respite from the indulgence over the festive period, I couldn’t pass up a beer-related stop could I? Of course not…

Initial searches turned up blanks in the Barnsley area for craft beer, unsurprising really considering it’s a stronghold for real ale. It wasn’t until Twitter came to my rescue (thank you to Andrew Clarke!) and I was pointed in the direction of Maison Du Biere at Elsecar. Sitting in the heritage site amongst craft shops, a soft play area and an antiques centre it certainly is an interesting location.

It’s quite rare to find a true one-stop shop for your beer needs; a bottle shop, a bar and an online shop. Maison Du Biere is exactly that, though, and offers every opportunity for shoppers to enjoy their beers. There are 10 taps to sample and a plentiful selection of cans/bottles to take away or drink in so it’s unlikely you would find yourself short here.

I was surprised how busy/popular the shop was when we visited. Not at any detriment to the shop or its quality, more that there are so many loyal patrons and craft lovers in the nearby area. For any suspecting that the craft bubble may be about to burst or the movement slowing, I ask them to visit somewhere like this.

Considering that the shop must have been busy around the Christmas period, it was still well-stocked. Some labels were absent from the shelves making pricing a little difficult, but it was nice to see a blend of local beers and those from afar. The selection on the bar was good too, with lagers, fruit beers, stouts and ipas all making an appearance. Pretty much every taste was catered for which was nice to see.

It was hard to knock Maison Du Biere when we called as it is a haven for craft beer and a great one at that. Offering everything for their loyal customers, it would be unlikely that locals would look any further than here. With a charming decor, a warming atmosphere and extensive selection of beers, it’s hard not to recommend if you are in the area.
